Buying Used BMW Parts: What’s Worth Buying From a Breaker?

BMW repairs can get expensive quickly, particularly when a major component needs replacing. In many cases, buying a quality used BMW part can provide a much more affordable alternative to ordering a brand-new replacement.

But not every component is equally well suited to buying used, and compatibility can be particularly important with BMW parts.

At Allstar Breakers, we regularly dismantle BMW vehicles and supply reusable components from cars that are no longer economical to keep on the road. Here are some of the BMW parts that can be worth sourcing from a breaker and what you should check before buying.

If you already know what you need, visit our main BMW breakers and used BMW parts page or contact us with your vehicle registration and part details.

Why Buy Used BMW Parts?

A BMW can reach the end of its useful life as a complete vehicle while still containing plenty of perfectly usable components.

An accident-damaged car may still have an undamaged engine, gearbox, interior or electrical components, while a BMW with major engine failure could have valuable panels, lights, wheels and other parts elsewhere on the vehicle.

Buying used can offer several advantages:

  • Lower costs compared with many brand-new BMW components
  • Access to genuine original BMW parts
  • Parts for older models that may be difficult or expensive to source new
  • Reuse of components that might otherwise go to waste

Used BMW Engines

An engine replacement is one of the biggest repair bills a BMW owner can face, so a suitable used engine can sometimes make repairing the vehicle financially worthwhile.

However, simply finding an engine from the same BMW model is not enough. Different versions of the same model can use different engines, so the engine code, vehicle specification and compatibility all need to be checked.

It is also worth establishing what is included with the engine and any available information about its mileage and condition.

You can find more information on our used engines page.

Used BMW Gearboxes

Gearbox repairs and replacements can also become expensive, particularly on older BMWs where the cost of a brand-new unit may be difficult to justify.

A used gearbox from a suitable donor vehicle can therefore be worth considering.

Make sure the exact gearbox specification is matched to your car rather than relying solely on the BMW model name or engine size.

Take a look at our used gearboxes page for more information.

BMW Turbochargers

Turbocharger failure can lead to an expensive repair, particularly if several related components also need attention.

Used turbochargers may be available from suitable vehicles, but this is a component where condition matters. Make sure the correct part is identified and establish what checks have been carried out before purchasing.

BMW Headlights and Rear Lights

BMW lighting units can be surprisingly expensive to replace new, particularly on models fitted with more advanced lighting systems.

A good-quality used headlight or rear light can therefore offer a worthwhile saving.

Make sure you check the exact specification. Two lights from the same BMW model can look similar but differ according to model year, trim level or lighting technology.

Doors, Wings, Bonnets and Body Panels

Used body panels can be particularly useful when repairing minor accident or cosmetic damage.

Depending on current stock, breakers may have:

  • Doors
  • Wings
  • Bonnets
  • Boot lids and tailgates
  • Bumpers
  • Other exterior panels and trim

Finding a panel in the same colour can potentially reduce the amount of paintwork required, although the condition and exact paint match should always be checked.

BMW Alloy Wheels

If one wheel has been cracked, buckled or badly damaged, sourcing a matching used BMW alloy can be much cheaper than replacing a complete set.

The wheel needs to be the correct size and specification for the vehicle, and its condition should be checked before fitting.

BMW Interior Parts

BMW breakers can also be useful when replacing damaged or worn interior components.

Depending on the model and stock available, this might include:

  • Seats and headrests
  • Door cards
  • Centre-console components
  • Switches and controls
  • Interior trim
  • Storage compartments
  • Other dashboard and cabin components

Used parts can become particularly useful as a BMW gets older and certain trim pieces become harder to find new.

BMW Electrical Parts and Control Modules

Modern BMWs contain a large number of electronic modules and control units, many of which can be expensive to replace.

Used electrical components may be available, but this is an area where compatibility is especially important. Matching part numbers may be necessary and some electronic components can require coding or programming after installation.

If you are looking for an electrical part, provide your registration, the part number where available and as much information as possible about the component you need.

Are There BMW Parts You Should Buy New?

Used parts are not automatically the right choice for every repair.

Routine service items and components designed to wear through normal use will often make more sense to buy new. The same applies where the condition or remaining usable life of a second-hand component cannot be established with enough confidence.

The aim should be to find the right component in suitable condition rather than simply choosing the cheapest option.

How Do You Make Sure a Used BMW Part Will Fit?

BMW models can vary considerably depending on engine, gearbox, trim, model year and specification.

When asking a breaker to find a replacement part, provide as much information as possible, including:

  • Vehicle registration
  • BMW model
  • Year of manufacture
  • Engine size or engine code where relevant
  • Any visible part numbers
  • A photograph or description of the component

This makes it much easier to identify the correct replacement.

What Should You Ask Before Buying a Used BMW Part?

Before ordering, it is sensible to establish exactly what you are buying and whether it is suitable for your vehicle.

Useful questions can include:

  • Is this part compatible with my registration?
  • Has the part been checked before sale?
  • Is there any visible damage?
  • What exactly is included?
  • Will coding or programming be required?
  • Does warranty cover apply?
  • Can the part be delivered?

Warranty cover is available on qualifying parts supplied by Allstar Breakers. Full details can be found on our warranty page.
